First they need it right away and then they want my help writing their script not to mention they need the time to practice the whole routine.

hy wait until you have been asked?

Start NOW!

If you are working for clients who would enjoy a magic show with a little bit of motivation mixed in with the entertainment then start now.

Don’t wait until the last minute. Prepare yourself now. Decide now what topics you want to focus upon. Start writing your outline and carefully choose the effects you want to use to illustrate your message.

Test Them Out

After you have decided what topics you want to address (also note the ones you do NOT want to speak on…) you need to pick an effect that will best illustrate your message. Then test them out.

Put one of your new motivational magic tricks in the middle of your current magic shows. Test it out on the audience’s you currently are performing for. You don’t have to deliver the whole message, just enough to perform the effect. Decide if it fits you. Master the skills needed to create the effect. Make it a part of you.

Dont-Wait-CreateI found people appreciate a short motivational message in the middle of a show for entertainment purposes. Make sure it is entertaining, fun and magical. It also advertises your skills when presenting such a program to those interested.

Deciding now what effects you want to use to illustrate your motivational messages will put you ahead of the game. Your routines will look more professional and you will enjoy your work as a motivational magician and not feeled pressured.

Here is a hidden secret….once you start your work on creating a list of routines and effects for your motivational programs you will begin to attract the opportunities to present those types of programs. This is a universal principle called the law of correspondence. Soon, you be making more money from magic/speaking programs and at the same time enjoying the process. Why, because you created it and now they want it.

Ego vs. Talent?

Today I posted a poster on my FB page that read, “TOO much EGO will Kill your Talent.”

And I stated, “Some time ago…I had to learn how to NOT let my ego corrupt the beauty of my talents….and I continue to keep my ego in check. Testing, testing…one two, check, check!”

ego vs. talent

The response I got back was interesting…it inspired me to write the following.

To my memory, I have been aware of my ego since my childhood and I have experienced both success and failure at keeping it under my control as I became aware of myself.

I have learned that the ego itself it NOT evil or bad. We all have an ego which serves its purpose and that is….for survival. Let me explain what I mean.

The ego knows only itself….it loves itself….it is self centered to protect us from the world around us. Without it, we can be taken advantage of, become prey to the outside world. It is our ego that tells us to stand up for ourselves and even fight for whatever we want.

The ego will compromise in order to get what it wants…it will even appear to love someone else but the truth is its interest is really only in itself. Selfless love, unconditional love comes from the divine within you.

Your “Talent” is a part of….what I call….your “True Self” or as others say your Higher Self. When you become aware of your True Self you open yourself to your purpose in life….hidden in your True Self is your joy, happiness, satisfaction, peace and love.

Your talents are a gift you give to others….it is only in the giving that you will find great joy and satisfaction. The ego does not understand that….it only gives to get something in return.

When we become aware of our gifts and talents…with that comes the wisdom to know how to use them….to best know how to give and share it with others…especially the ones who know how to appreciate you and what you have to give.

As an entertainer….I use my talents to give people a sense of wonder, joy, fun and laughter. When I do that….I do it with great gratitude. I have learned how to exercise my gifts and talents to be the best at giving what I have to give.

If I let my ego control me…then it will want to control the outcome….and when it does NOT get what it wants then I am frustrated, unfulfilled and confused. When I use my talents to the best of my ability with joy and gratitude…then I am at peace…knowing that I have given it my best.

I stopped listening to my ego…I do NOT let it criticize me…make false accusations or stop me from using my talents and learning how to do this has taken time and understanding. I have learned how to let love be my motivation not my ego.

The Power In Writing

Writing is extremely powerful….that is if you put your thoughts and ideas on paper then you taking them out of the invisible into the visible.

This is an act of creation. You are a creator. Everyone is a creator. Some of us are better than others but everyone is designed to create.

Your thoughts and ideas is where it all begins. When you write, you go beyond the power of speaking. Writing down you thoughts and ideas is a recording, a record of your thoughts and ideas. It will exist long after you are gone. That is if you make it available for others to read.

Writing will give you a huge benefit. First it allows you to express your thoughts. You begin to organize them in the process of writing. Writing allows you to get clear about what it is you are saying. This is a very important benefit, more for you than it is for your readers.

Your next benefit in writing is it gives you credibility. When you write and especially offer your writings for others to read, others will note your effort in your writings and they too will benefit by reading them. Those write are obviously serious about what it is they have to say. It shows the discipline you have made to put your thoughts down on paper. (Note, when I say paper….that also includes typing on your computer.)

One more benefit for your writing. You can create residual income by writing a book, an e-book, a training manual, or a insider newsletter.

You may want to script your speaking programs. But I have found that most scripting is done for special presentations like selling, training videos, or introductions. Most speakers today work from an outline and they speak from their experiences not from a script.

You first challenge is to start writing. I am not going to talk about how to write at this time but rather the purpose of this writing is to get you motivated to start writing. Let it flow, avoid trying to edit when you start writing….that will come later. If you don’t start writing then there is nothing to edit. So the first major step is in your writing.

Now that I have you thinking about writing….I challenge you to write your first e-book. The poster below will give you some suggestions to think about.

Using “Motivational Magic” in Product Promotions and Sales

When I began to coin the phrase “Motivational Magic” I defined it as any form of magic trick to present a message and one of them was in motivating people to buy a product.

Trade Shows

Naturally every TrSteve Trade Show MikeSellsade Show Magician is promoting a product or a service to those who come by the both  and most clients will use the magician to help draw a crowd and to catch leads to important trade show  attendees. The client will often ask the magician to include a marketing/sale presentation in this magic  routine but not always. I found I was able to charge more for my time at a trade once I convinced the client  I was NOT only entertainment but also a marketing tool for their company. This photo of me working for a  potato chip company…my job was to draw a crowd and then give away free sample bags of chips which I  had magically made appear….

Product Promotions

My good friend Gene KeeneyThe Keen Genii” he worked for Kahn’s Meat Company for 25 years, retiring in 1987. He work trade shows but he also worked in groceries store all across the country. Gene was paid a salary and stock in the company….which later became a wealthy investment for him. When it comes to getting paid….always think in the long terms instead of the one performance…..focus upon building relationships instead of just booking yourself for a show.

For a couple of years I ended up working for International Foods promoting their products in several grocery stores in Indianapolis, Cincinnati, and Chicago. My job was to draw attention to their products using my magic and then giving away coupons. It was a very simple job working 3-4 hours aSteve Grocery Store Promo day…sometimes two stores a day…two or three days a week. They booked the stores for me and paid me per store appearance.

So how do you get a job promoting products as a magician?

There is no “one way” of doing it…..International Food found me…other companies I approached them. Choose the kind of markets you would enjoy working in. Sometimes you will talk to the marketing departments other times you will have to talk to the owner of the company. When you call upon them…you will find they are willing to meet with you since your are a magician and they are curious to see what you have to show them. BUT I did NOT do a lot of magic but rather I spoke to them about what I had to offer them. Within a few years I was doing more and more product promotions…most of the work was a result of my talking about my successes with other companies and identifying how I could benefit them.

Remember you are a visual arts entertainer and the best way to sell yourself is in their face….not through printed or video promotional material. Do what ever it takes to meet with them, tell them the benefits of hiring you and then give them a sample of your magic.

One client came to me wanting me to help pitch their computer program to Abbott Laboratories in San Francisco…I had them help me write a 20 minute script which I had to memorize and make some customized tricks to communicate my message. They flew me there, paid all my expenses to present this pitch to four groups within the company. It was successful in selling their program. I got paid $5,000.00 and they got a 5 million dollar contract with Abbott Laboratories.

How my career as a Motivational Magician began:

As a young boy I pursued magic as a hobby and later I began to make it a money making adventure. By the time I was 14 I was performing magic shows in my local area and getting paid. Then I won first place in the stage contest at the Magical Youths International . I was determined to become a professional magician.

MYI First Place Stage Contest Award 1969

But my parents and my guidance counselor encourage me to get a “real job” and to attend college. So when I graduated from college I got a job as a salesman and it didn’t take long before I was using my magic to further my sales career.

One day I lost my sales job and I immediately started promoting myself as a professional magician.
With in a year I had replaced my income from sales and I became very successful entertaining audiences all over my 5 state area.

I was then asked to present a program for a local Chamber of Commerce so I combined my magic with a few motivational messages and they loved it. I had found a new adventure. But it took several years for me to learn how to combine the two and to promote myself as a “Motivational Magician.”

I began attending the local chapter of the National Speakers Association and within a few years my work as a Motivational Magician took off.

As a motivational speaker/entertainer I was making five times what I was making as a magician and I was having FUN doing it.
